Not all men are body conscious ,but many men could be conscious,embarrassed ,ashamed of their body if they have some different than normal thing. For eg i am super hairy guy and hence i AM very conscious,ashamed and embarrassed about my body. And i can't even imagine getting near a woman.
So, it all depends upon the individual and his situation.
And i don't think its any bad thing if men want to compete and look better than women.
