hi hidden,
there is no such limit as far as law is concerned.
though there are some social standards-but it is not compulsory just like one is not supposed to fart intentionally in somebody's face, yet you can do it if it pleases you.
generally-bride can be a year or two years older than the groom and the groom can be 0-6 years older than the bride(according to all the marriages I've attended in India)
further more it depends on the region of the world you live in -like in western countries or the countries where people get married through only mutual consent(out of love) without any intervention or help of family(they only get married if somebody chooses them otherwise they practically have no chance) larger age gaps are quite common.
in countries where families are an important part of the process of marriage(whether it is a love marriage or arranged) like the Indian subcontinent larger age gaps in married couples are not that common.however if somebody falls in love with someone a lot younger or older than them there is no social or legal technicality which can stop them if they are of legal marriage age.
demerits(it depends if you are in a forced marriage if yes than these can hold true and if it is out of love than obviously these will not matter)
- compatibility both physically and mentally if there is let us say 15-20 years age gap in a couple, than one of them is bound to be more mature due to age which can sometime cause problem due to the way different people of different age groups perceive things .
physically- the older one might not be in as good shape as the younger one and this might cause problems at various levels.
pariah - yes some immature people might find it way too weird .
generation gap-if the couple decides to have kids the age difference between the kids and the older parent would equal to at least two generations and that might cause problems for the family (when parents dont understand what their kids want, why they want it and above all what the hell is that thing?)
loneliness- in an ideal condition the older spouse is supposed to die 20 years earlier than the younger one (considering all factors equal and their age difference is 20) so the younger one has to spend 20 years alone before dying.(i agree this is a bullshit point ,but hey! it is possible )
honey.
